OVERCOMING EVIL WITH GOOD (by benaiah juma).
Rom 12:17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.
Rom 12:18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
Rom 12:19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
Rom 12:20 Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.
Rom 12:21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.
The word of God instructs us to overcome evil with good. This means that when we are wronged by people we should not do what the devil or the world expects us to do. The world expects us to react and show violence in words or actions when we are offended but since we are called out of the world we should display Christ like attributes.
Do not fight with men; our fight is not against flesh and blood but against principalities that work and are living inside people. When a person is not saved and under the control of evil spirits will always offend people. We are instructed to do good to those who offend us.
If a person utters an insult we are not supposed to insult them back but we are advised to speak something positive about them if they have one. If you don’t see anything positive to say to that person it is recommended that you keep quiet and ignore the insult.
When you recompense evil for evil you develop grudges with people and you will not be living according to the will of God. Grudges can bring someone to the judgment seat of Christ and if we have to avoid this we are to try as much as possible to live peaceably with all men, that is why the lord Jesus Christ told us to be forgiving so that our heavenly father can forgive us.
If somebody wrongs you, do not defend and fight for yourself, this is how the children of the world behave, if someone offends you live it to God to avenge your adversaries. If you fight for yourself God will not back you up, but if you are offended and do good to the offending party God will fight for you and be your defender.
The lord Jesus Christ was insulted by the Pharisees and he spoke no word, which made the Pilate to marvel. We are also to follow the leadership of Christ and not fight back at insults but ignore them for we know the truth and we live under the instructions of the word of God.
Give your enemies food if they are hungry, give your enemies drink if they are thirsty, and help those who hate you. Let there be a contrast between light and darkness. If you recompense evil for evil both of you are children of the devil and there is no difference between you two. When a person is doing evil, you are recommended to do good deeds so that you show the God you are serving.
When Jesus Christ was arrested by the soldiers who came with the chief priests; Peter struck one of the soldiers ears and Jesus Christ healed the soldier’s ear despite that they were coming to arrest him. This shows us that we should do good to those who wrong us. Brethren in Christ Jesus let us not be overcome with evil, but let us overcome evil with good.
